EDI Policies

Our current equality, diversity and inclusion related policies, for staff and students.

We have adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.

“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

The IHRA definition of antisemitism

This formal definition will allow the University to devise meaningful strategies to tackle antisemitism and better understand how it manifests itself. Our adoption of this definition is not intended to curtail free speech. We remain committed to defending freedom of expression and academic freedom, within the law and within a framework of respect.

We are actively reviewing our approach to tackling antisemitism, including consideration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition, in discussion with our Jewish staff and students and wider communities.

We have adopted the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) definition of Islamophobia and we use guidance from the Coalition Against Islamophobia to apply this definition:

“Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”
