Inclusion Essentials at Edinburgh

Inclusion Essentials at Edinburgh is an ‘expected learning’.

This course will provide you with a foundational understanding of what inclusion at UoE does and should be like for our staff. Inclusion doesn't mean treating everyone the same. It's about understanding people's different needs, perspectives and backgrounds, and ensuring equality of experience.

Inclusion doesn't mean treating everyone the same. It's about understanding people's different needs, perspectives and backgrounds, and ensuring equality of experience.Inclusion isn't about just meeting obligations under equality law or having a visibly diverse workforce. It's about creating a culture where diversity is highly prized, where people feel respected and valued, and where everyone knows that they will get the opportunities, support and resources that they need to succeed.

Protected Characteristics such as age, sex, race, religion, sexuality, disability or gender identity, are a start, but we need to consider other characteristics that can cause people to be excluded or marginalised, such as their socio-economic background, any neurodivergences, or whether they have caring responsibilities.

By taking this course you will be able to:

  • Understand what we mean by an inclusive University of Edinburgh
  • Identify the key benefits for us of a more inclusive work/study/research environment and culture
  • Know the various characteristics and minority groups who are at risk from exclusion in the workplace and beyond, and the specific challenges that they may encounter
  • Take an inclusive approach that supports all people and makes them feel invested in the team and the organisation
  • Put in place best-practice solutions and strategies to create an inclusive working environment
